Heather | CBT Psychotherapist

Online Psychotherapy Glasgow

Do you feel overwhelmed or anxious? Is it all getting too much at times? Do you feel stuck but don't know how to change? I can offer a supportive, calm, safe environment for you to explore your issues and work towards the best solution for you.

I have 16 years of experience as a psychotherapist to draw on in helping you to deal with anxiety.  I tailor my approach to each individual using CBT alongside Acceptance & Commitment Therapy, Compassion Focused Therapy and others.  I do understand how overwhelming anxiety can be and will offer you a safe place to talk whilst encouraging you to make the changes necessary to help you feel better.

I have been working as a psychotherapist since 2009 both in private practice and as an affiliate CBT Therapist with the NHS as well as several Employee Assistance Programmes. I am also an accredited provider for CIGNA Insurance.

It's important to choose a therapist with appropriate training and experience. I have a COSCA accredited Diploma in Counselling and Groupwork - A CBT Approach and I am an Accredited Member of COSCA, the professional body for counsellors in Scotland as well as a Supervisor for trainee and fully qualified therapists.  Although my training is in CBT I use an integrative approach as we are all different and respond to different ways of working.

I have worked with people on a wide variety of anxiety related issues including OCD, tokophobia (fear of pregnancy and childbirth), other phobias and general anxiety. All my sessions are remote so that location is not a barrier for you.

I decided on this profession as having had therapy myself I know that it can make such a difference and I'm passionate about helping others fulfill their potential and not be held back in life by issues that can be dealt with.

Specialisations and Expertises

I specialise in general anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), tokophobia (a fear of pregnancy and childbirth) and parental anxiety.  I have worked with hundreds of clients with these issues over the years.  Almost everyone wants to know exactly how long it will take to feel better and whilst I would love to give you a specific answer, it is impossible to do so as I don't want to give false expectations.  Everyone's situation is different but a commitment to do tasks in between sessions will increase the overall effectiveness of therapy and decrease the amount of sessions needed.

Whilst I can make a recommendation on the frequency of sessions, this is completely up to you.  I work in a flexible way which allows you to choose the frequency.  You are not tied into a specific number of sessions so you can take a break or stop at any time, to suit your circumstances.

Most common issues I support people with:

OCD

OCD is a complex, overwhelming condition but there are proven techniques to help reset your brain and thought patterns to let go of those compulsions because continuing to give in to them only pulls you deeper down.  I can provide and understanding, supportive environment for you to tentatively take the steps to challenging those obsessions and compulsions using exposure & response prevention.

Tokophobia
Tokophobia is a fear of pregnancy and childbirth which is not well known but actually affects a great many women.  It is more than just feeling a bit nervous about giving birth.  It is an overwhelming fear which often leads women to avoid becoming pregnant in the first place (often through excessive use of contraception) or even avoidance of babies or other pregnant women in general.  For some the fear is around being pregnant, whether that is a baby growing inside them or the related symptoms of pregnancy.  For others it is a fear of the birth process itself and for many it is a mixture of both  Some women only realise they have this fear when they become pregnant or maybe it develops in subsequent pregnancies following a traumatic first birth.  I have worked with lots of women to help them face this fear in order to have a baby as well as with others during their pregnancy and beyond.

Parental anxiety
Becoming a parent is one of the biggest life changes you will go through and any change can often lead to anxiety.  This coupled with lack of sleep, the constant care of a baby, demands of a toddler alongside trying to adjust to this new role in life can be a struggle.  Whilst becoming a parent is a most wonderful thing, many parents feel guilt when they don't experience positive emotions all the time or struggle to hold it all together.  Becoming a parent can put a strain on your relationship, lose your sense of identity and at times can feel like a lonely existence but therapy can help you through this time of change to bring back some sense of calm and joy to this time in your life.

GAD (generalised anxiety disorder)
Facing your fears and anxiety is a scary thing to do.  That's why I will be alongside you each step of the way, showing  you ways to understand and calm your anxiety and step out of your comfort zone at a pace that suits you.  I work with general anxiety as well as specific phobias.
